La variante G del Pz. IV fue fabricada a partir de Mayo de 1942. En Abril de 1943 comenzó la producción de la variante H—la variante más fabricada del Pz. IV. El Ausf. H tenía el cañón mejorado del Ausf. G, y utilizaba una sola plancha frontal de 80 mm en vez de láminas separadas. Una transmisión nueva reducía ligeramente la velocidad del vehículo pero era más confiable. Los tanques de esta variante tenían placas de tela metálica de 5-8 mm de espesor, en el casco y los costados de la torreta. Un total de 3.774 vehículos Ausf. H fueron construidos.
